MOVIE SYNOPSIS - Where can I watch it and what's the story of this 1957 film?

On the eve of the American Civil War, the idealistic professor John Wickliff Shawnessy leaves Nell Gaither, his childhood sweetheart, and starts a passionate affair with Susanna Drake, a rich and beautiful southern New Orleans, which ends in marriage. Once married, John learns that Susanna's mother died in an insane asylum and begins to fear that it is an inherited disease.
