On the eve of the XXI century, Abderrahmane Sissako, Mauritanian filmmaker living in France, returns to Sokolo, a village in Mali, to join his father: " Dear father, you will be surprised and even concern yourself receiving a letter from me. I do to make sure all is well., we had something important to bring me back to Sokolo: the desire to film Sokolo life, life in my land, and the desire to get away from everything, knowing that soon the year 2000 and nothing has changed for the better. you know better than me.
