MOVIE SYNOPSIS - Where can I watch it and what's the story of this 1957 film?

The stubborn old skipper Heinrich Borchert refuses to recognise the progress of the new age. For him, sailing for the DSU is out of the question. He is a private ship owner - and stays that way! In order to be able to pay off the mortgages on his barge 'Marie', he takes more cargo on board than is sensible and risks a dangerous draught in the shallow Havel water. Neither his friend Hermann Vollbeck, also an old inland waterway skipper but sailing for the DSU, nor the protests of his son Karl dissuade him. After all, Borchert is only doing all this for Karl, who is supposed to take over the barge one day and have a better life. He, however, has other ideas about life. Instead of being a slave to the ship or having to plague himself with debts, he would like to have time for more pleasant things in addition to work.
