While bombs destroy Hong Kong in 1941, Xiao Hong lies abandoned in a hospital almost recounting his life to a fan. Xiao Hong is a writer torn by expectations that women had, by his fickle lovers, and their own complex needs. As a young man faced the prospect of an arranged marriage, and left his family and pursued his dream of attending college.
