MOVIE SYNOPSIS - Where can I watch it and what's the story of this 2002 film?

In a small town on the coast of New Zealand, the aborigines of the tribe Whangara moreover believe that originate from a single ancestor, whose existence dates back a thousand years ago. According to tradition, the chief of the Whangara, the "Whale Rider", the Paikea, must be a firstborn son. His name is Paikea, and narrowly escaped death after his canoe capsized, riding on the back of a whale.
