In June 2005 in Spain approved the Gay Marriage Act. Mayors rightwing huge cities tried to boycott the law. However, the gay mayor Francisco Maroto saw this as an opportunity to enrich the population of his small town, Campillo de Ranas, in the province of Guadalajara. The Bridal rural development strategy launched by Maroto has reversed the trend of depopulation by promoting the town as a place for weddings, gay weddings in particular.
