MOVIE SYNOPSIS - Where can I watch it and what's the story of this 1987 film?

Five centuries ago a mural was created in a rural church north of England, to thereby be later covered under layers of white paint. Tom Birkin, a veteran of the First World War, comes to small town to restore the mural, against the wishes of the Reverend and also many of the people who see him as an outsider who even gets to alter the established order.
